JAM* Architects is an Amsterdam-based agency, owned by Jeroen Mensink, that works on assignments in the public and private sector, does research, writes books and essays.
They asked me to design a website with CMS.
In his work, Jeroen Mensink deals with a number of abstract concepts that are related to art. During preliminary meetings he talked about images that continue outside the frame
and the suggestion of boundlessness and infinity
as a starting point for his designs.
Together with photographer Kees Hummel, he documents each finished project in a series of pictures that also function as independent works. Those pictures don't merely represent the architecture but also the life that takes place in it, and have a tense atmosphere.
I quite literally incorporated Jeroen's interest in frames and framelessness into this design. You can only see parts of the documentary material. When you move your mouse over an image, it turns out to be larger than it seems to be. This creates the feeling of looking at the images through binoculars—you never quite see the big picture. This idea is perpetuated in the design of certain menu's.
The website roughly consists of three types of pages:
– Presentation pages, on which multiple articles are presented, e.g. the Home page;
– List views in which all documents of a certain type are summarized, e.g. the Work page;
– Detail pages that contain articles, thumbnail galleries and project descriptions, e.g. this project page.
On every page introductory parts of other pages are listed, in order to create cross-references. These make up the main method of navigation, through which the visitor can loosely browse the site. Menu's are located at the top and bottom of every page to provide a structured way of finding information.
In order to organize the JAM*'s diverse activities, they use a flexible menu structure that they themselves can customize.
The website is bilingual (English, Dutch) and features a CMS that JAM* can use to create, format and organize files, menu items and keywords.
