LWA is the agency of Rotterdam-based architect Laura Weeber. LWA develops living concepts for the public and private sector.
Laura asked me to design a website.
Visual Design
Working from analysis of architectural and urban issues and the market, LWA develops concepts and solutions that she then presents to governmental institutions and project developers.
Laura wanted to present her work in an online portfolio that was not primarily aimed at acquiring new business.
In her work, Laura researches applicable systems that result in natural variability and variety. This controlled irregularity
—that is also present in her house style—was the starting point for the design.
All elements on the site adhere to a strict grid with cells measuring 162 × 11 pixels. The placement of an element and the amount of space it occupies on a page, is determined by a number of rules. Because the grid is not visible, irregular white-spaces are created that seem to break the matrix.
The house style elements on the site have a decorative function and simultaneously serve as a menu structure.
Structural Design
The website roughly consists of three types of pages:
– The Home page;
– List views in which all documents of a certain type are summarized, e.g. the Design page;
– Detail pages that contain articles, thumbnail galleries and project descriptions, e.g. the project pages.
The site does not use a CMS, but is CMS-prepared. This means that a CMS can quickly and easily be implemented without having to make changes to other parts of the site. In this way, the investment in a website can be spread over time.
The system uses XML to store information, allowing updates to be made in minutes.
This website and visual identity are no longer in use because Laura Weeber has changed her line of work in 2009.
