Keen is the multidisciplinary design agency of Herman Van Eldik and Hans Pols, based in the Hague.
They asked me to design a website with CMS.
Visual Design
Keen works for a wide range of clients and on an equally wide range op assigments. They work in graphic and interaction design, exhibition design, video production.
In previous branding they used the image of a shoe box collection (old shoe box in which emotional souvenirs are kept), as a metaphor for this diversity of activities. That image became the starting point for the design of their website.
Because any project of Keen's may span a variety of media (sub-assignments), and because the visitor needs to be able to find information about a wide variety of services, the main problem was to find a way to logically structure the information on the website.
My solution was to put all projects on one big pile and provide the visitor with the possibility to filter it for themselves.
When you enter the site, you see a long list containing the titles of all projects. When you click a title, the corresponding project slides open and you see the project information. Using keywords, you can make specific selections from the total range of projects.
Documentation
Keen also asked me to think about a simple method to create documentation material for pitches and potential clients. Before they used to make new documentation of relevant projects for every new situation.
The website contains a secured section, that potential clients can log in to, in order to access a hand-picked selection of project information.
Structural Design
The website roughly consists of two types of pages:
– List views in which all documents (from a certain keyword) are summarized, e.g. de Home page;
– Detail pages that contain articles, thumbnail galleries and project descriptions, e.g. this project page.
The site features a simple CMS that Keen can use to create menu items and project pages.
