In 2009, the Judiciary Council–part of The Dutch Judiciary and the Supreme Court of the Netherlands–organized a debate series, in cooperation with the Forum for Democratic Development (FDO).
They asked me to design the written report.

Background
In order to bring attention to the role of justice in society, the Judiciary Council, the Department of the Interior, the Department of Justice, the National Prosecutors Office and the Netherlands Bar Association organized the Justice Week, in the summer of 2009. An important part of this project, was a series of thirteen forum discussions on the relation between civilians and the judiciary, which took place in court buildings throughout the country.
The documentation of this debate series is a real piece for reading; it counts thirty pages. Comfortable legibility and typography are the starting points for its design.
Visual Design
The visual design of longer texts–like literature and reports–poses specific and interesting issues. I have looked for solutions that enhance readability, and simultaneously form a visual mini-identity.
The main design element is the use of droplines: new paragraphs don't left-align but indent to the end of the previous line. This makes for easy reading (your eyes have to jump less) and evokes the image of a conversation. Moreover, the droplines make for a specific layout.
The report brings to mind official documents, by its great attention to (rather classic) text formatting. The color scheme is based on the visual identity of the Council, and refers to justice and law.
The text is divided by horizontal rules, with decorations of forward slashes that subtly refer to the logos of both the FDO and the Council.
